Affiliate marketing depends on website traffic. Article marketing is one of those ways to funnel great amounts of free traffic to your website.

Writing articles, submitting them to article directories, and then waiting for people to read them is still a great way to deliver quality content to the masses. The articles are indexed by the search engines, and – if your keyword research has been done right – it will be ranked relatively high. But, that all seems a bit archaic today. Sure, it still works. I write tons of articles every month for clients and submit them to article directories for free traffic. But, there is more to article marketing than just the basic write/submit routine.

Getting More Affiliate Traffic From Your Articles

I have always believed that the true beauty of online marketing is the creative aspect of it. There are no real limits to what you can do with your marketing – this is so true for affiliates. Affiliate marketing is more than landing pages, PPC campaigns, and writing articles. Affiliate marketing is really about creativity. How to get your message, or a certain product, out to as many people as you can for as long as you can.

In my business, one of the things I have always strived to be is in the forefront of creativity. All of the marketing materials, consulting sessions, and advertising campaigns that I have put together are based upon this one principle… creativity.

Article marketing is a great way to keep the creative juices flowing. Of course, article marketing is also a great way for sustained free traffic. A lot of people think that this will mean spending long hours writing hundreds of new articles. And, it does. I do not want to make it sound like writing articles does not take any time. (This is why outsourcing your article marketing needs is a big benefit!). However, you can get more use out of one article than just submitting to an article directory. Here are 15 ways that you can do that.

1. Create A Video From It – Creating a video for affiliate marketing is a great way to get further free advertising. It is pretty simple to do and can be quite fun. Use your article and create a video on that article. You can read it into the camera, but it probably will not be very popular. But, if you spend a little time rehearsing your presentation, you can turn that article into a video.

2. Develop A Short Report – Articles for affiliate marketing work the best when they are within the 400 to 500 word range. Short, concise and easy to read. Expand on that article a little more and create a downloadable report. This can contain more information, more tips, special newsworthy items, or other things you feel are important. You can host this report on your own site, on a landing page all its own, or on a site like Scribd.com or Docstoc.

3. Rewrite Article Different Ways – I have an older post about this way to get extra mileage out of an article. The idea of this is to create three different articles, based on one, and submit to other article directories.

4. Tweet It – Twitter is a great way to get your message out. One way to be creative in your article marketing is to send a series of “tweets” that cover your article points. You only have 140 characters to use at a time, but you could break up the different points of your article into smaller bite size portions.

5. Create A Longer Squidoo Page From It – Squidoo is a place you can create a “lens” on the topic of your choice. It is like a blog only in the respect that you can write about what you want. You monetize each lens through different affiliate links an Adsense. Use your article to create a Squidoo lens. You can reword it a little if you want, add more content, embed videos, and other cool things to make your article more interactive.

6. Develop Autoresponder Series – You can do this either with one article, or with a bundle of articles all on the same topic. Create a short email series that breaks up a longer article into different main points, or uses a series of articles.

7. Use Article In Teleseminar – Setting up a teleseminar is a pretty easy thing to do. And, you can host your own teleseminar for free. The amount of people who can attend is limited, but usually there is not a problem. Host a teleseminar on the topic of your article where you can simply read it over the course of the seminar. Pause for questions or remarks, and even invite a special guest. If you have several articles, then you can have a series of seminars on all of them.

8. Get Article In Someone Else’s Product – Getting extra exposure for your article will help you gain more traffic that you might not have gotten otherwise. This extra exposure can come from other website owners. This tip will take a little digging on your part, but it is worth the time. When you find out that someone is writing a report, a course, an ebook, or some other type of product, strike up a conversation with them about the topic. From there you can introduce them to an article you wrote. Ask their permission to send a copy and maybe they will include the information – and your byline – in their new product, on their website, on their blog, or mention it somewhere else.

9. Use As A Facebook Note – Facebook has a great feature called Notes. This is where you can write down different information in the form of short articles. You can even connect the notes to your blog posts. Reprint your article within your Facebook notes and your connections will be notified of them.

10. Send To Mailing List – When you write a particularly good article, make it a special mailing to your email list. This does not need to be in the form of a newsletter or an ad. Simply a personal letter with the article in the body, or a link to it on your site.

11. Combine To Make Ebook – After you have several articles on the same topic, you can combine them into an ebook form. With a little rewriting, rewording, or editing to make it all go together smoothly, you can even sell it for a small fee.

12. Use Article To Answer Question – Participating in forums is a powerful way to get extra traffic. Combine your forum activity with your article marketing only creates double exposure. When someone asks a question that is directly related to your article, you can either repost the article as the answer (if this is allowed by the moderator) or direct the forum readers to it through a link to your site where it is hosted.

Article Marketing Creatively For Extra Free Traffic

Writing articles for affiliate marketing does not have to be a dull activity. Use these different methods to get extra mileage out of your current, and future articles.

Take a look at the articles you have now. Can you do anything else with them besides sitting on a webpage? Choose some of these tips, or come up with your own creative uses for your articles. Doing so will give you extra mileage – or more free traffic – from the articles you have already written.

Have fun!

Your Daily Kick is my daily commitment to deliver solid steps for you to take in your internet marketing journey. Today’s kick is one we have visited before, but something you should do now…

Drop A Comment

Commenting on blogs is a method of attracting targeted traffic for a few years now. When it first started, the comments were something like, “Great blog! Check out my blog too!” Oddly enough, it worked. You would not receive thousands of new hits to your own website, but you would begin to receive new traffic. Today, this type of comment does not work. In most cases, it will not even be approved by the moderator. So, dropping a comment on a blog is not a quick process.

Comment Today

Before you travel to your favorite blog and begin dropping comments, there are some things you should first keep in mind.

1. Always keep the comment on topic.

2. When commenting on a blog post you have two choices; agree and expand on the point being made, or disagree and offer a civil rebuttal.

3. Comment on blogs that you want to be a fixture at. What this means is that you are willing to join in several of the conversations that are happening on the blog.

4. Only place a link in your comment if it is relevant to your point. Other readers will find your blog by simply clicking on your name.

5. Commenting on blogs is not a place for overt advertising. It is a relationship bridge.

Find Five Blogs To Comment On

Your task today is to find five blogs that you can leave a comment on. Make sure that they are all relevant to your own website. Follow the five steps outlined above and you should start to see some traffic from it. After you have done your commenting, do not let it stop there. Continue to build up a list of other blog sites that you can visit on a daily basis and see what is now.

The easiest way to do that is through RSS feeds and Google Reader.

After The Comment – Added Marketing Power

Here is a little tip to give today’s daily kick a little more marketing power. After you have found five blogs to comment on, and after you have left your great comment; go social with it.

If you have a Twitter account (and if you do not, start one!), then Tweet the blog post to your followers. This will not only help the website owner get a little more traffic, but also expose your comment to more people.

So, there you have today’s assignment. Give it a try and drop me a comment about your results.

With a blog you can easily keep a fresh supply of articles posted without worrying about them being declined by some article directory. You can include as many links as you want while also being very personal. However, many people are intimidated by the thought of starting a blog. You don’t have to be if you remember one HUGE blogging tip.

Keep Posts Full Of White Space!

You have probably heard by now that people on the Internet skim the various posts and articles they find. The sad thing is that so many people do not adhere to this. They smash in 24 sentences in one paragraph and follow that up with a longer one. No one is going to read that.

The reason for this is pure psychology. If your blog posts are all mashed together your brain will say that it is too hard to read and want to move on. If there is enough white space, though, it will look easier to read.

Cut your paragraphs into smaller, two to three sentence, paragraphs. Doing this will help the reader move at a constant pace down your post. Once they have read it they will not feel like the life has been drained out them and click on a few of the links.

Have a blog? Thinking of blogging? Use shorter sentences with a lot of white space. That, my friends, is the best blogging tip ever.

53. Focus only on selling a product.

54. Limit yourself to just one advertising method.

55. Waste your money with safelists and paid “guaranteed” traffic sites.

59. Try to do everything yourself.

60. Present an answer to your target audience’s problems.

The Biggest Marketing Do Of Them All

You can really get lost in the do’s and don’ts of advertising website and kind of lose the fun of it. (Yes, advertising and marketing is fun!)

You can also get so wrapped up in what you should and should not do that you kind of get frozen and don’t know where to go. But, I think I can lessen the anxiety a little bit with the number one marketing “do”.

Just do it.

You simply won’t achieve any type of traffic to your website if you don’t do something. Get started slowly and begin to build as you learn, work with someone, and see some results. But… you must do it!

What about you?

Do you have any tips for the “do” and “don’t” list? I’d love to hear them. Why not jotting it down in the comment section?

Yes, you should sit down right now and write three blog posts.

Don’t let that scare you though. While you are writing three different blog posts they can still be the same. The previous Daily Kick was about setting up three blogs for you to use in your marketing campaign. Today you’re going to begin using those blogs as a traffic generator.

But, you still have to write three blog posts.

Different but the same

Can things be different but the same? Sure, there are all kinds of examples of things are different but the same.

Cars. You have Ford, Chevy, and Dodge. They are all cars, but different manufacturers.
Fruits. You have strawberries, oranges, and kiwis. They all taste great, but grow differently and have different tastes.
Houses. You have large mansions, smaller single family homes, and even condos. But, they are different in construction, price, and even durability.

There are a lot more examples, and I’m sure you’re probably thinking of them right now. And another example would be in your blog posts. You can have three posts that are the same (all dealing with the same topic) but are different (each one unique in wording or narrow focus.)

Here’s what you’re going to do.

Write one post three different ways.

Post #1 If, for instance, your three blogs are on the topic of fishing. Being from Northern Maine, I love fishing. It’s just about the only thing to do in the summer besides watch grass grow. Anyway… sit down and write on generic post on fishing like the types of lures that can be used for smallmouth bass.

This doesn’t have to be a major article of 1,000 words. A short listing of about five lures and short descriptions of each would suffice. Then you post it on your fishing blog.

Post #2 You take that same article and change it to be a little bit narrower to include lures that work in certain parts of the country. For example, fishing for smallmouth bass in Maine.

Post #3 The last post is a little more focused. You could now focus on specific lakes, weather conditions, or depths.

You’re written one but got three out of it.

That’s the key to success with three blogs for marketing, traffic generating, and preselling. And the key to keeping you sane and saving you time. Three same, but different blog posts.

Give it a try. Go ahead and write that one post, then narrow it down a little for two more short posts.

It’s a New Year! Today is Jan. 2nd and I am absolutely brimming with excitement about what this year holds in store. But, not just for me. I can’t wait to hear about the incredible things that happen to you this 2009!

To help you get your year started right I want to share with you a daily kick that is both very powerful, but also a little bit time consuming. Quite simply what you need to do is blog. But, not just once. Three times.

Blogging three different ways.

This is going to take a kick to get started. But, the rewards are greater than the investments.

What you need to do… today… is set up three different blogging accounts for three separate blogs. Yes, I said three. It’s easy. Trust me.

There is a reason for my madness here. By using the resources available on the internet for free promotion of your website, you are able to spread your name, brand, and offers in a much wider area than if you kept everything in one playground. I’m going to use a basketball example to help illustrate this.

In basketball there are five players on the court at a time. They must work together (passing, communicating, setting screens, moving without the ball, and other basketball terminology) in order to move the ball past the opponent’s defense and score. And not just once, but many, many times during the course of a game. Your blogging campaign is much like a basketball team. You need more than one player. You can have one really good player, but you need more than one.

Each “player” helps you to move the ball around by actively sending traffic to the “basket” (that would be your main website where your sales pitch is made). The players are the blogs, the blog posts, the guest posts, the comments… pretty much everything that happens at that blog. Only it’s not just one… there’s three. At least.

Set up your new blogs

This post is not a tutorial on how to set up a blog. What I’m going to do, though, is give you direction on where to go that will make setting up your three new blogs fairly easy and straightforward.

Blog #1. Go to Blogger.com and start an account. It’s free and it’s pretty simple.

Blog #2. Go to Wordpress.com and start an account. Again, it’s free and fairly straightforward.

Blog #3. This blog is going to be a self-hosted blog. That means it’s not free. You need to have a web host account and then set up a blog of your own. This sounds a little bit daunting, but it can be done pretty easily. Here’s how…

1. Go to Dreamhost.com and get started with a very cheap hosting account. You can get hosting for as little as $5.95 a month.

2. Register a domain name through the same account. You get a free domain name with you order so that makes things easier and cheaper. If you want to add more they are only $9.95 a year.

3. Once your account is started and your domain is registered Dreamhost has a great feature. They have this thing called “One Click Install”. Basically what it does is installs your choice of extras to your website. Even Wordpress blog platform. You don’t have to download anything. Just click it, set up some information and it’s ready.

Each Different, But The Same

Before you go off to do your merry blogging keep this in mind.

While your blogs are all teammates they should all have distinct personalities. What I mean by this is that while being the same niche, they should be different in topic. Each blog stands is basically the same niche, but are focusing on a different topic within that niche. This way you can attract different visitors than you would with just one blog. See, teammates working together for the benefit of the team.

Another consideration to keep in mind is that you should mix up the info so you aren’t using duplicate content. If you write a blog post for one blog that could be used on the others reword them and use different phrases throughout each post.

Of course, original content for each blog would be a huge benefit to your traffic, and more importantly your search engine rankings. Don’t let that scare you. They don’t all have to be 1000 word posts. Short, concise 200 word posts are just as effective.

So….

Go start those blogs. Get them set up and start posting. Stay consistent at it and you’ll begin seeing traffic coming to your main site through three different funnels.

Online advertising is complex.

There are so many methods that one can use in advertising a website, or blog, that it can easily overwhelm someone and cause inaction. But, it doesn’t have to be that complicated.

One of the things I always tell my advertising package clients about advertising is that the key to advertising is to pick a few advertising methods and work them until you feel comfortable with the whole marketing thing and then test other methods.

The question I usually get from clients is “What strategies do I start with?”

Three MUST Do Marketing Strategies

In my opinion there are three marketing strategies that you MUST use each and every day. Whether or not your are a new online marketer or have been doing this for 10 years, these three must always be there.

Number 1 Online Marketing Strategy.

Write articles.

This has been pushed and pushed and pushed and pushed for years. Everyone knows that writing articles for advertising your website is the most powerful marketing strategies you can use. Unfortunately there are still those that don’t bother with it or are marketing rather poorly with articles.

Article marketing works when done consistently and within certain boundaries.

Article marketing pointers…

1. Be consistent. Write at least 5 to 6 articles a week and submit them to major article directories.
2. Write short, easy to read articles instead of long, drawn out ones.
3. Spread your articles around the web but don’t submit each one to every directory.
4. Write original articles for blogger.com and wordpress.com
5. Link back to relevant pages on your site, or landing page, in the author’s info box.

No matter where you are in your internet marketing adventure, article marketing is absolutely essential.

Number 2 Online Marketing Strategy.

Get social.

Whatever you think about social networking there is no denying the fact that it is quickly becoming a very powerful form of marketing. However, it’s still in its infancy and a lot of people are not very comfortable with this new strategy. My opinion is that in the next year the emphasis will swing towards even more social type networking. But, I could be wrong… that happened once…. I think.

Anyway, going social is not as hard as one would believe, but it can be very intimidating. Especially if you are a naturally shy person like me. But… it can be done.

Social Media starter tips.

1. Set up profiles on Facebook, Twitter, and StumbleUpon.
2. Check out what others are doing, saying, and networking on each of these sites.
3. Begin following and friending people on each site.
4. Start connecting with your followers and friends by engaging in conversation.
5. Sprinkle a few links within your conversations.
6. Be active and relevant.

That’s about it to start with. After you feel more comfortable with engaging in conversations and meeting new people then you can begin to branch out into other social media marketing type websites.

Number 3 Online Marketing Strategy.

Blogging.

If you’ve been following me for any length of time you will wonder why my other favorite online advertising method is missing. That being solo email ads. Well, I do think they are essential but for this post I wanted to focus on free strategies for those just getting started or those who have been marketing for a long time but are still bootstrapping it.

Blogging is a marketing strategy. You can start a blog for free at blogger.com or wordpress.com and write posts about any topic you choose. It’s basically a great way to test niches and products.

Anyway for marketing purposes it is absolutely necessary. Here’s why.

First, search engines love blogs. Especially Blogger. With some very basic SEO techniques and informative posts you can begin ranking high in search engines.

Second, you have another powerful advertising technique built in. One of the reasons that blogging is very popular right now is because of the ability to leave comments. Through leaving, and receiving comments, you are building a huge network of links back to your website, or blog. Plus you’re starting to be achieve some name recognition which is the main goal with any advertising campaign.

Third, it’s fun. You get to be a little more loose with your writing than you would be if you were just writing articles. Sure, you are going to keep your blog updated with great information but you also get to let your personality come out more.

Get started with your advertising campaign today with these three marketing strategies.

Write articles.
Get social.
Start blogging.

Three things you can start doing without spending any money and will lead to a tremendous increase in traffic and profits. Give it a try.

Your Daily Kick….

A daily kick in the advertising pants to help you get more traffic, increased exposure, and strong reputation.

Your Daily Kick for Thursday, May 29!

Advertising Action: Leave comments on relevant blogs.

With advertising you want to do three things.

1.) Funnel more traffic to your website.
2.) Increase your exposure around the internet.
3.) Build a strong reputation for repeat traffic.

When you leave comments on blogs you are doing all three things at once. It’s the one time where a scattergun approach (blasting away in several directions) is actually a very focused (intense, straight) form of advertising.

Commenting On Blogs Gives A Glimpse That Leads To Wanting More

If you do it right.

Unfortunately, a lot of people think that just breezing through, leaving a “Great post” comment, linking to a completely unrelated blog, and hoping for the best is paramount to a landslide of traffic. I hate to burst your bubble… but it’s not.

Comments on blogs is just that; a comment. You leave a short, specific, related, and useful comment for the author, or the readership, to know that you a.) appreciated the post, b.) agree with the points presented, c.) have something else that is of use to add, d.) disagree with the author and have reasons why, and e.) know of another topical post, article, or resource that might help.

Leaving comments, at least for me anyway, is rather difficult. There are times when you read a blog post and are pretty inspired that the comment comes to you right away. But, then there are those times when I actually outline a comment much like I would an article of my own. I sweat over it.

Why? It’s that important that you get it right.

Commenting on blogs to me is like an audition. You only have about 7 seconds to do those three things I mentioned earlier. How? How do you get your message across with just a few words?

Be natural. A major focus of commenting on blogs is to sound natural, much like having a casual conversation with the author. Don’t sound stiff. Don’t use big, industry words (unless completely relevant to the audience). Don’t come off sounding “stuffy” Lynn Terry, and Jeff Jones are great at this.

Twitterize your comment. It’s amazing how much one simple website can change the way things are done. Communicating has taken a drastic turn with the popularity of Twitter. With Twitter you have 140 characters to get your message through. Use the same philosophy when commenting. While there are occasions when a long comment might be in order… that’s the exception, not the rule. Try to keep your comment short and to the point. A few paragraphs is good, a book, or essay, isn’t.

Provide useful information. There are times when I actually like the comments better than the actual post. At times comments provide some great useful information that lead to better understanding and/or other relevant resources. When you’re leaving a comment add something to the conversation. This does a great deal in accomplishing the three main goals of advertising.

Use humor only if it’s understandable. I like humor. I also like to think of myself as a pretty funny guy when the situation calls for it. Leaving comments on blogs could be one of those times, but it might not be too. A lot of people try to be funny only to look pretty bad. The tone of the sarcasm, the language barrier, cultural lingo, or situational joke can all be misinterpreted and lead to you sounding like a crass, tightly wound idiot. Use humor, but only when it’s appropriate or you the humor can’t be mistaken.

Provide link to your own blog post. If you have already written a blog post on the topic that might have a different angle, a few more points, or some useful resources a link back to it is ok. Just as long as you set up the link first and explain why you’re adding it.

Add to other comments. One of the reasons I like comments more than the actual posts is because of all the people actively engaged in helping other commenters. If someone didn’t quite understand something and asks a question in the comment section, there are always some great feedback, followup, and answers from others. You actually receive more than what the post author bargained for. You should also be one of those who helps out.

Get Your Daily Kick started by leaving comments!

Ok, now you know why and how. It’s time to begin.

Starting today… right now… start leaving comments on at least three to four blogs. This doesn’t mean that’s all you should do a day. That’s a minimum. If you come across a blog post that really resonates with you or your website go ahead and drop a few lines.

Make this a daily task for your advertising campaign and you’ll see a marked improvement in traffic.

This post we are going to see what chapters 4, 5, and 6 have to offer.

Writing your blog

After you get through the technical aspects of blogging, chapter 4 begins the real “meat” of the book. We begin to finally learn what the title suggests… the secrets to making money with blogging.

Chapter 4 is all about how to write on your blog. The one thing I did like about this, and Chris and Darren, is their commitment to content. The chapter starts out with the most important thing you’ll learn in the entire book. The first statement is “Much has been written on what makes a blog successful, but all experts agree that central to all great blogs in one element: great content.” If you get nothing else out of this book… keep that nugget of truth close to the front of your mind.

The chapter goes on to explain just what good content is. The authors admit that great content is pretty relative, “Good content will vary from person to person depending upon their needs, the topic they are talking about, and perhaps even a person’s ethics“, they do consider some universal traits to good content.

The chapter goes on to talk about good writing tips, tips for writing titles, post length (which is great info for bloggers of any experience) and frequency, and finishes with a great section on 20 types of blog posts. I know I’ll be referring to this part frequently.

This was a great chapter and worth the cost of the book alone.

Making money with your blog

After learning how to write a blog post, Chris takes over and begins to set the stage on the actual monetization methods of blogging. He begins by making a great point. There are several different ways to make money with a blog. Each blogger will have their own ways, but there are some guidelines to follow.

The sections include;

Should you make money with your blog?

When should you attempt to make money?

Factors to consider in monetizing blog.

Different types of monetization methods and payment types.

How to find advertisers.

Different ad formats.

How many ads to display.

How to integrate affiliate programs.

Donations and indirect income strategies.

A lot of info on how to make money is crammed into this chapter. But, more specifically the “where” and the “what to do” parts of making money from your blog.

Buying and Selling Blogs

This is something that I really don’t have much interest in. That doesn’t mean that this chapter was useless. I learned a lot about the business of buying and selling blogs and if I ever wanted to try this then I know I’ll be picking apart this section.

Some of the information includes;

Why sell and/or buy blogs.

Making the decision.

Buying to sell or flip.

Where to sell and instructions on how to sell your blog.

Like I said, I’m not sold on the whole buying and selling of blogs. But, I do know that there are a lot of people doing it and are making an incredible income from it. To me, this is the chapter that I didn’t get a lot out of, but might be going back to later.

Thoughts so far…

So far I am pretty impressed with the book. I think that Darren and Chris really want to get some relevant, useful information into the hands of people that think they might want to try blogging as a source of income.

I do feel that experience bloggers probably won’t learn anything earth shattering in the first few chapters, new bloggers are in for a great treat. That doesn’t mean that experienced bloggers shouldn’t pick up a copy. I know that as I read things that I already knew were reinforced and new ideas started to churn. So far… a great investment and enjoyable book.
